Custom Design Options
Custom Designed in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin
At Tri-Star Cabinet & Top Co., Inc., our mission is to design and build the highest quality cabinetry for our customers. To further our mission, we believe that the design and customization process should be a collaborative effort between Tri-Star and each client. This process allows our design team to make our client's dream space, a reality. We will work with you to incorporate your choice of wood, finishes, door and moulding styles, hinges and hardware, and much more. Visit our showroom to see our amazing selection of cabinet options.
Our cabinets are built from one of our standard wood species, combined with one of our door styles, and then stained and finished with one of our specialty finishes to create truly stunning and unique products. Alternatively, we can match or create any color that you desire in our local factory to create your unique finished product.
Wood Species
Choose from over 11 different wood species. Our highly requested species are briefly summarized below:
Oak
Oak is tan to reddish brown in color. Red oak is a strong wood used for its natural beauty of open grain, mineral streaks, wormholes and knots, which are all considered “the fingerprints of nature.”
Pine
Pine is off-white to yellow to orange brown in color. Pine is a naturally soft wood enhanced by knots throughout its grain.
Birch
Birch is off-white to light brown in color. Birch is a subtle grained species of wood that is very smooth in texture and light in color. Color variations, knots, bird's-eyes (small black dots) and wormholes give this species character.
Hickory
Hickory is off-white to gray to dark brown in color. The most unique feature of hickory is its wide color variation. This is commonly known as a "Zebra-stripe" effect. Knots and wormholes bring additional life to this particularly strong and closed-grained wood species.
Beech
Beech varies in color, ranging anywhere from white with a red tinge or may be light to dark reddish brown. It is generally a straight-grained wood with a close uniform texture. Beech takes color and stain easily and also looks good in its natural color.
Silver Maple
Silver Maple is off-white to grayish white in color. Silver Maple is naturally straight-grained and smooth in texture but may have sugar streaks, occasional mineral and pin knots or sometimes curly grain marks that give the wood character.
Maple
Maple is off-white to light brown in color. Much like birch, maple is a subtle-grained wood that is smooth in texture and light in color. Curly grain, sugar streaks and bird's-eyes are examples of what you see when looking at a maple door.
Alder
Alder is light brown or pale yellow to medium reddish brown. Alder is somewhat uniform in color throughout and is fairly straight-grained with a uniform texture. It has an appearance similar to cherry wood.
Cherry
Cherry has a pink to reddish brown to deep red color. Cherry is a strong wood with an open grain, characterized by knots, mineral streaks and color variation. The more natural light received by this wood, the darker it becomes.
Walnut
Walnut has variances of light and dark areas in the wood. Darker stains tend to disguise this characteristic more than lighter stains. Natural changes in color from the original color occur in as short as 6 to 12 months. The color change varies depending on the light of each individual area.
Bamboo
Bamboo is tan to brown in color. Bamboo is an Environmentally Preferred Product. It has a tight-grained appearance with narrow staves, scattered color, specks and nodes, which give this wood its distinct look.
Color Matching
No color is impossible. Tri-Star Cabinet works closely with paint and stain manufacturers to assure the closest possible match to any color you choose. Show us a color, and our professionals will create a custom paint or stain — just for you!
Finishes
Stains, painted glazes and other specialty finishes are offered in numerous colors to satisfy a wide array of tastes.
Standard Stains & Finishes
Five sanding techniques — including machine and hand sanding — are used on each door to achieve the smoothest surfaces on which to apply our stains. Hand-rubbed stains produce the rich, deep shades of color that enhance the natural beauty of all our wood species. A pre-catalyzed sealer coat that locks in these stains is then topped off with a post-catalyzed varnish, which creates a durable finish that resists heat, UV rays and most household chemicals.
Accent Finish - Tri-Star’s accent finish is a design technique used to enhance the details of the selected door style and moulding. First, the standard base stain or paint color is applied and then an accent color is sprayed with a special spray gun to any beaded areas, grooves and edges. This process does not change the base color of the cabinetry.
Highlighting Finish - The highlight finish also enhances the artistic details of the selected style of cabinetry. The process involved to include a highlight finish is similar to that of an accent finish. In the highlight process, the color that a client selects is sprayed over a door or piece of moulding and then hand wiped from all flat areas. This leaves a natural look to any edges, beaded areas or grooves. This process does change the color of the base stain or paint that is used.
Glazing Finish - Tri-Star's glaze finish is also used to create unique and artistic styles. The glazing process includes the application of standard base or paint color, followed by a client's selection of glaze color that is applied to the entire door or moulding. Our team then hand wipes each piece leaving a noticeable rag mark. This process will also change the color of the base paint or stain that is used.
Leather Finishes
Tri-Star’s innovative leather finishes are applied much like our standard stains and finishes, but have an additional de-nubbing (super-fine sanding) step and a “crackle layer” application that gives the appearance of aged leather.
Distressed Options
Cow-tailing, weathering, worm holes, dents, razor cuts, joint cracks and splattering are special processes that we offer to impart an antique, worn look to the cabinetry.
At Tri-Star Cabinet & Top Co., Inc, our countertops are available in a range of types, colors, and designs. You’ll be able to customize the look of your countertops by choosing from edge treatment, overhang, and backsplash options. Our designers are here to help you choose the countertop that matches your needs and personal style.
You’ll choose from:
Laminate
Our laminate countertops are durable, stylish and more affordable than you think. Laminate products come in a wide variety of colors and designs, allowing you create a look for your kitchen, bath or home office that expresses your individuality. Our laminate tops have square edges but are also available with a laminated beveled edge, wood edge or a solid surface edge to match or complement your cabinetry. Laminate vanity countertops are available in single or double-bowl options.
Cultured Marble
Transform your bathroom with cultured marble countertops and custom shower surfaces that offer stylish and elegant durability. Cultured marble is a manmade, hand-casted material that resembles the natural beauty of quarried marble. It can be molded into many sizes and shapes, and is available for your bathroom vanity with integral or drop-in bowls made of the same material. Cultured marble is available in many colors, including standard marble colors, solid colors, and onyx or granite colors. Choose from the standard polish finish or a matte finish. Many different edge treatments are also available.
Solid-Surface Synthetic Countertops
Corian, Gibralter, Meganite, Earthstone and Hi-Macs are synthetic solid-surface products that come in whites, off-whites, solid colors and a tremendous selection of combined colors, some of which are made to mimic the patterns found in stone. Enhancing the look, integral sink bowls made of the same material are available for these tops in various solid colors. These stain-resistant countertops are food-grade approved for commercial kitchens. They are very resilient — minor scratches or cut marks can be easily buffed out. Nonporous synthetic products discourage the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew.
Quartz or Engineered Stone
Cambria, Caesarstone and Silestone offer the look of stone — but without the maintenance. Manmade, engineered stone combines real quartz crystals with composite material. This means that you get the deep rich colors of stone in a nonporous product, and a nonporous countertop doesn’t stain or require yearly maintenance. Engineered stone resists impacts and scratches, and like synthetic solid-surface material, this product does not support the growth of mold, mildew or bacteria. It is also food-grade approved for commercial kitchens.
Granite
If natural beauty is what you like, choose granite. Granite countertops offer a large variety of colors and patterns — from bold variations in the stone’s color to subtle blends of subdued tones. Granite is a heat- and scratch-resistant material that complements any type of cabinetry. Stone is porous and, as such, requires yearly maintenance that consists of sealing the countertop to protect it from stains.

Choose from four different hinge construction options. Most door styles are available with any hinge option for further customization.
Hidden
Hidden hinges, also known as concealed hinges, cannot be seen when the cabinet door is closed.
European
A European hinge is a type of hidden hinge that is most commonly used on frameless-style cabinets. European hinges are adjustable to facilitate door alignment, permit a range of door-opening angles, and make it easy to remove the door for cleaning and refinishing.
Inset
DoorsInset doors fit inside the face frame opening of the cabinet, providing a clean design line while minimizing gaps between cabinet components. Inset doors use butt hinges or surface-mounted cabinet hinges. Personalize your inset doors with beaded or flush insets to suit your taste.
Beaded Inset
A subtle groove, or line of beading, is built into the face frame along the door edges to add an edge detail to the design, reminiscent of old-world craftsmanship.
Flush Inset
Flush, or plain, inset door designs do not have the grooved detail. This design offers clean lines that coordinate well with the simpler modern or contemporary styles.
